That’s right kiddos – the re-launch of JohnnyGeek.com is here, and with two major changes to boot!

First and foremost, although my personal experience the last many years has been with WISA (Windows/IIS/SQL/ASP), I’m going LAMP (Linux/Apache/mySQL/PHP). That’s right – I drank the kool-aid.
Having been a Microsoft guy for so many years (Microsoft guy…who developed ASP/VBScript on a Mac…figure that shit out…), I am absolutely terrified of LAMP, but I have been assured through much peer-pressure and ridiculing at my refusal thus far to “just doooo eeeet”, that I’ll be much happier in the end.
(Yes….I made WISA up – Microsoft doesn’t allow cutsey acronyms of their shit.)
The second major change is that I’ll no longer be “rolling my own”, as it were. It is quite obvious to me that I have either the time to design, develop, host, update and maintain a “personal” site – OR – I have the time to create content for a personal site.
I clearly don’t have time for both.
To that end, I’m going with an off-the-shelf CMS package, so that once initially configured, I can (within reason) update content by filling out a simple form, rather than dicking around in Dreamweaver with actual coding for every little thing. I looked at Drupal, Joomla and ExpressionEngine – but in the end WordPress won out.
So after years of faithful service, I will be shutting down the Compaq Proliant server that has been humming away in my bedroom closet, and I’ve fired up leased LAMP space. (Windows server for sale…cheap.)
I’m hoping this blind leap of faith will allow me to focus what little personal time I have to coughing up what all of my friends and family have been complaining that I don’t do enough of – writing, sharing my photography, and poking general fun at the ridiculousness of the world around me.
If not, I will be collectively blaming (in order) Tom, Lewis, Richard, Anthony, Scott, Ricky and Eric – the LAMP ninjas that hypnotized me into rubbing one out to the über-coolness of LAMP in the first place.
